Creation challenge

June 2009 was a month of reflection for Lancaster Methodist Church on the theme

Whose world is it anyway?

“The Earth and everything on it belong to the Lord. The world and its people belong to him.” (Psalm 24)

Methodist young people through the Youth Executive have challenged the Methodist Church to take the issue of Climate Change seriously -
churches and individuals are being encouraged to get involved by taking a month of action - Stem the Tide.

So what has happened at LMC in June?
- Themed worship on all four Sundays - helping us to think about how we should be caring for God’s creation and why, as Christians, we should care about climate change.
- Open house afternoon on Sunday 14 June - an opportunity to think about changes we can make in our own homes.
- An eco-audit of our premises at Scotforth Road.
- A table of information in the foyer about Christian organisations that are involved in green issues
- Improved recycling facilities at church.
- Weekly leaflets distributed to help people to think about their own response to the challenge.
- Car-share / walk / cycle to church day - Sunday 28 June
- And, coming during July, a speaker from the Breathe network.

A major report on these issues was approved by this year's Methodist Conference: "Hope in God’s Future: Christian Discipleship in the Context of Climate Change"

On Saturday July 18th some of us spent a day with the Faiths4Change Team carrying out personal and church green audits. Actions were identified and we will be meeting again after the summer break to monitor progress.

At the beginning of October 2009 we reviewed the actions we'd taken: water saving devices have been installed in toilets, a new heating controller has been installed for the foyer and draught-proofing, insulation and secondary glazing are being investigated. We joined in with Christians and others concerned about climate change in events in Morecambe and Lancaster, part of the One Planet Festival organised by LESS (Local & Effective Sustainable Solutions). On Sunday 4th October we held a prayer breakfast as part of the Climate Change Day of Prayer organised by Churches Together in Britain and Ireland.
